Lectures on "Citizenship and Tolerance" in Portugal


We are pleased to let you know that in parallel with hosting the Tolerance Poster Shows, ”Politécnico da Guarda“ (IPG), "UNITA - Universitas Monitum" and "Direção-Geral do Ensino Superior" (The Directorate General for Higher Education), an organization part of the "Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation" are organizing series of lectures on "Citizenship and Tolerance".  The lectures will be held in the different IPG schools.

The first lecture is about the legacy of the Portuguese consul Aristides Sousa Pereira. During the Second World War, he helped Jews in Germany to obtain Portuguese passports, and later he did the same with Jews in France. Despite the huge problems caused to him by the Portuguese fascist regime, Aristides Sousa Pereira managed to save 30,000 refugees, of which 10,000 were Jews. The speaker will be Aristides' grandson, and he is going to talk about his grandfather and his legacy. 

The second lecture will be from an emigrant woman, who will talk about the problems, obstacles and pains she had to go through in order to reach Europe. 

The third lecture conference will be about disability, tolerance and citizenship. The speaker is José Miguel Nogueira, professor at the University Institute of Lisbon – Iscte, Deputy Director and researcher at “Centre for Research in Sociology Studies” - CIES and Operational Coordinator of the “Centre for Disability Studies”.

The fourth Tolerance Talks speaker is Rosário Farmhouse. She has a degree in Anthropology from the Higher Institute of Social and Political Sciences of the Technical University, with a specialization in Social Anthropology. 

Rosário Farmhouse was elected as a municipal deputy to the Lisbon Municipal Assembly on the Socialist Party lists in the municipal elections held in September 2021. She is currently President of the National Commission for the Promotion of the Rights and Protection of Children and Young People, a position he has held since November 13, 2017. As part of her duties, she is Portugal's representative on the Committee on the Rights of the Child of the Council of Europe, where she holds the position of Vice-President. She was awarded several awards and decorations: Officer of the Order of Infante D. Henrique by the President of the Republic – March 2003;  decorated by the President of Ukraine with the Order of Princess Olga – September 23, 2008; awarded the Medal of Civic Merit by the President of Moldova – 24 May 2013; awarded by the President of Romania with the Medal of Merit – December 11, 2014. The fight against injustice and the fight for equal opportunities have been areas in which he has focused his civic action.

Lecture to Future Police Officers on Symbols of Hate

On December 6th, a lecture on symbols of hate was held by Mirko Ilić for 48 new police recruits in the Training Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Skopje, North Macedonia. Mirko Ilic was invited to come to the Center by invitation of the Assistant Minister of the Training Center, Mr. Vlatko Mitkovski. During the lecture, Ilić spoke about the importance of recognizing and understanding the meaning of the symbols of hate used by neo-Nazis, racists, and various hate groups, which bombard society daily through the Internet, street graffiti, and different sports fan groups. He explained how police officers, as part of their professional work, must learn to recognize these symbols and do everything in their power to stop the spread of these messages of hate and bring positive changes to the community.
