Tolerance Posters

Tolerance poster design by David Tartakover featured in the 'Fonts in Use' blog. " For his contribution, Israeli designer David Tartakover opted for a photographic self-portrait in which he applied lipstick. The text is in English, Arabic, and Hebrew, and makes early use of Abraham . This multiscript typeface for public signage was designed as my graduation project at the KABK in The Hague. Abraham was subsequently released with Fontef .' – Daniel Grumer  

Angelina Lippert   is the chief curator and director of content for the  Poster House  in NYC, which, believe it or not, is the only museum dedicated exclusively to posters in the United States. She totally amazed me by writing this article in real-time for the Poster House blog about today's pop-up show at Union Square.  Here, you can read the whole article.    

In today's Daily Heller . "To date, most of the exhibitions have been mounted outside the United States. Some domestic institutions have signed up for the show, but have since decided to cancel it for unspecified reasons. It seems, in part, that tolerance has become politicized at a time when intolerance has risen throughout the world.  The Tolerance Project starts a conversation about inclusion, which can only begin with a foundation of tolerance. “The show utilizes the unique power of design to remind us what we all have in common,” says organizer Mirko Ilic."  

I recently came across this blog post on the prestigious Japanese blog "Spoon & Tamago" . The post is about the first Tolerance Poster Show in Tokyo , Japan, and talks about the importance of this kind of show in raising awareness of tolerance and equality. "Curated by Aya Komboo and Matthew Waldman, the exhibition seeks to raise awareness for all forms of diversity, from gender to LGBTQ, while also acknowledging Japan’s inaction and lack of awareness when it comes to equality. Japan consistently ranks low when it comes to inclusivity and diversity, especially compared to other developed nations."    

I am pleased to let you know that today   Steven Heller   published a post about the "Students for Tolerance" workshop in his prestigious blog "The Daily Heller". Inspired by the "Tolerance Project", this initiative was started by   Tomislav Bobinec   a professor at the Institute of Design and Communication at FH Joanneum Graz in Austria. This is the second year of the "Students for Tolerance" workshop and is a collaboration of art school students from different European countries. You can read Steven Hellers post here .  

This is the press release for the first Tolerance Poster Show in Japan.  The show will be a part of this year's   Roppongi Art Night , Tokyo's most   important two-day art festival on May 27/28 (Sat/Sun). While the event   recorded over 800,000 visitors in the past, this year's attendance is expected to   exceed 1,000,000. The Tolerance Poster Show will be displayed on art boards   along Roppongi street prior to other programs beginning May 23 (Tue). This show was made posible by director Aya Komboo, professor Matthew Waldman, and   SAMCARA Design Lab of Keio University's Graduate School of   Media   Design , and with much help from   Yuko Shimizu .  

Today October 17th, EFSYN newspaper from Greece published an article about the Tolerance Poster Show that took place on October 2nd in response to the Neo-Nazi rally in Plauen, Germany. According to  my greek-speaking friend:  "The article is more than just positive – a real in-depth positive comment on the core of the Tolerance Poster Show concept."

"On May 17, Ukraine soldiers relinquished their defensive positions after bravely enduring a weeks-long Russian bombardment of the Azovstal factory in Mariupol. They mounted a valiant defence. Coincidentally, in 2019 the Tolerance poster exhibition (the red pin on the map below) opened only a short distance from the besieged steelworks. That venue is now destroyed." On February 2nd, the  Tolerance Poster Show  opened in the Colonnade windows of the Foundation Building of The Cooper Union in New York.   In September 2021, the I nstitut français organized the Tolerance Poster Show in Edinburgh, Scotland. As part of the show, they conducted interviews with two Tolerance poster artists, François Caspar and Alex Jordan . In the interviews, the artists discussed the role of graphic design/posters in raising awareness of social issues.    You can watch the interview with François Caspar and Alex Jordan here.

Here is a post by MVM about the Tolerance Poster Show. MVM organized and held the show at Wangfujing Youth Center in Changsha, China. The show showcased 128 Tolerance Posters. Two popular Chinese bands, Opps! and MFmachine, performed at the opening. MVM (Modern Sky Vision Maker) supports the influential indie music companies in China, it also creates design & artwork out of passion and connects musicians and digital media artists.
