Tolerance Posters

We are pleased to share with you the first announcement of a new Tolerance Poster Show at   Berlin Design Week 2026 .  The announcement is translated below: “82 Posters. 82 Languages. One task: to visually translate the word 'Tolerance' — in one's own language, using one's own means. The Tolerance Project is an international traveling exhibition founded by Mirko Ilić — illustrator, former Art Director of the New York Times Op-Ed pages, and one of the most influential voices in graphic and poster design worldwide. The posters were created by internationally renowned designers from all over the globe. Since 2017, the exhibition has traveled through more than 50 countries and reached over 700,000 people. For Berlin Design Week 2026, the Tolerance Poster Show returns to the festival for a second time. 82 selected posters will be on display at Macherei — printed by Lieblingsdrucker Berlin. On Sunday, October 2nd, participants of the demonstration organized by the nazi party "Der III. Weg" (the third way) gathered at Oberer Bahnhof Plauen (train central) in the early afternoon. The police and media estimated a crowd of around 230 people. About 30 Tolerance posters hanging on the ceiling of the lobby hall of the train station "greeted" these participants. The group started marching through the upper part of the city at 3:00 p.m., heavily secured and isolated by police forces, accompanied by several left-wing driven counter-demonstration groups and protesting citizens. Around 4:00 p.m., the group passed by another strategically positioned 20 Tolerance posters mounted on a fence between the elementary school "Karl-Marx-Schule" and kindergarten "Pusteblume" (Dandelion). "On May 17, Ukraine soldiers relinquished their defensive positions after bravely enduring a weeks-long Russian bombardment of the Azovstal factory in Mariupol. They mounted a valiant defence. Coincidentally, in 2019 the Tolerance poster exhibition (the red pin on the map below) opened only a short distance from the besieged steelworks. That venue is now destroyed." Tonight was the opening of the "Student for Tolerance" show. The poster exhibition explores the question of what tolerance is and  how it can be represented visually.  Design students from Dortmund, Graz, Ljubljana and Zagreb dealt with the question of how strong visual concepts and messages on the topic of tolerance can be developed with the help of various design techniques. The results were translated by the students into individual posters, which are presented as part of the exhibition “Students for Tolerance”. The resulting works are characterized by diverse design approaches and range from the classic poster to the mixed reality poster to  Tonight is the opening of the Student for Tolerance show. On April 11th, the workshop "Students for Tolerance" kicked off with my lecture to the students from Zagreb/Croatia, Dortmund/Germany, Ljubljana/Slovenia and Graz/Austria. This is an   article   on Kunstleben Berlin Magazin's website about the upcoming Tolerance Poster Show at Kunstbibliothek Berlin, which is part of Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. The show will be on display from May 17th to June 17th, 2022.   You can read more about the show   here .    

"Accompanying the Kunstbibliothek’s exhibition “Studio Tolerance” , graphic designer and illustrator Mirko Ilić will be joining us from New York for an online talk . As initiator of The Tolerance Project and author of “The Graphics of Dissent”, Bosnian-born Ilić has long pursued an interest in socially and politically driven graphic design. In this talk, he will give an introduction to his worldwide tolerance poster project and, looking into both historic and contemporary output, identify ways how graphic designers can answer calls to civic duty. The lecture is followed by a Q & A session with Christina Thomson of the Berlin National Museums’ collection of graphic design."

As a part of the Tolerance Poster Show in Kunstareal München District, in Germany, the St. Markus München church displayed Tolerance posters on the construction scaffoldings around it. On top of that, the minister of the church also decided to display the poster by Angie Wang , a US designer, in the altar room of the church.    The church seems to be the appropriate and the right place for tolerance. We are thankful to the minister for doing this.
